The Eyes of Maywood: Maywood Home wins DESIGNArlington Award

Maywood Home wins DESIGNArlington Award
The Harmon Residence, located at 2914 23rd Street North, recently won an Award of Excellence in the 2011 DESIGNArlington competition.  The Arlington County Board selected ten projects in the county for their outstanding architectural design and honored them during a ceremony on February 14, 2012.  An independent jury selected the home for one of five Awards of Excellence, the highest recognition of the competition, noting the project was designed like a "jewel box" with attention to detail, historic appropriateness, and well scaled-massing.
Originally built in 1915, the bungalow's small closed off rooms, tiny kitchen, and shared duplex garage needed major attention.  After living there for more than a decade, Mirga Harmon decided it was time for a change and hired Heidi FitzHarris, a Maywood resident, to turn her old bungalow into the home of her dreams. FitzHarris Designs, LLC has extensive experience with designing renovations and major additions in the historic neighborhood.
The design included a renovation of the original house and a rear addition that seamlessly integrated a new gourmet kitchen and screen porch.  The new kitchen is open to the dining room and creates a large social gathering space the house so desperately needed.  The design also maintained the house's original charm with custom cabinetry, handmade subway tiles, soapstone counters, exposed rafters, and reclaimed heart pine wood floors with radiant heat.  Outside, the design involved a new carriage house with a side porch for a garden focal point.  The remaining yard is designed as an inviting outdoor room to help the house "live larger," defined by the flanking porches with an organic shaped stone patio, vegetable and flower beds, and an understated white picket fence for some privacy.

Moonbow over Maywood

If you were outside last night (October 10) about 10:30 p.m. and looked up at the sky, you saw a ghostly ring encircling the nearly full mist-shrouded moon.  It extended all the way around the moon, orbiting at a distance of about 6 moon widths.  Along the upper western edge, the ring separated into prismatic color.

There is debate over the cause of last night's phenomenon, and also what to call it.  Diffraction rings, halos, moon dogs?  Is it caused by ice crystals in high-atmosphere cirrus clouds?  By water droplets in rain or fog?  Let's just call it a moonbow -- the best we've ever seen.
